Better known as one half of Macklemore & Lewis, Benjamin Haggerty has had an illustrious career as a solo performer. Born and raised in Seattle, WA, Macklemore was inspired to begin writing lyrics at age 15 by East Coast underground artists like Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, and Hieroglyphics. He started a hip hop group at his high school called Elevated Elements, which released an album titled Progress in 2000. That same year, he released a solo mixtape of his own under the stage name "Professor Macklemore".
in 2005, Macklemore released his debut studio album, The Language of My World, which featured the hit single "Love Song". A year later, Macklemore met future collaborator Ryan Lewis while Lewis was working as a promo photographer. While the two quickly became friends, it would take another three years for the duo to begin working together on music. Macklemore's second mixtape, The Unplanned Mixtape, was released in 2009 and reached #7 on the iTunes Hip Hop chart.
After experiencing overwhelming success in his collaboration with Ryan Lewis, Macklemore decided to release his second solo album, Gemini, in 2017. The record features the hit singles "Glorious" with Skylar Grey, and "Marmalade" featuring Lil' Yachty, and received overall positive reviews from critics.
